Meta Ad Creative Checklist: 12 Things to Check Before You Launch

Before you spend a cent on Facebook or Instagram ads, run your creative through these twelve checks. They catch the mistakes that waste budget.

On Facebook and Instagram, your creative does most of the work. Targeting tools have become more automated, which means the image or video you run is one of the biggest things you still control. A strong creative can make a modest budget go further; a weak one wastes even a large budget.

Use this checklist before every launch. It won't replace testing, but it catches the avoidable mistakes that quietly drain results.

Format and placement

1. Design for each placement, not just one

Feed, Stories and Reels have different shapes. As a starting point, a vertical 4:5 image or video suits the feed, and full-screen 9:16 suits Stories and Reels. A single square design stretched to every placement usually looks awkward somewhere. Design each size on purpose, or at least check each preview before publishing.

2. Respect the safe zones

In Stories and Reels, the top and bottom of the screen are covered by the interface: profile name, buttons and captions. Keep headlines, logos and key product shots away from those edges so nothing important is hidden.

3. Check it on a phone

Most people will see your ad on a small screen, often while scrolling quickly. Look at the design at actual phone size. If you have to squint to read the text, it's too small.

The message

4. Lead with one clear idea

Each ad should say one thing. A benefit, an offer or a problem, not all three. If you have several messages, make several ads and let testing show which one works.

5. Hook in the first moment

People decide whether to stop within a split second. The first frame of a video, or the most prominent element of an image, should give them a reason to pause: a bold claim, a surprising visual, a clear before-and-after, or a question that speaks to their problem.

6. Keep on-image text short

Use a short headline on the creative and let the ad copy carry the detail. Too much text makes an ad feel like a flyer and harder to read at a glance.

7. Make the offer easy to see

If you're running a discount, bundle or free trial, make it obvious. Place it where the eye lands, and make sure it matches the landing page exactly. A mismatch between ad and page is one of the fastest ways to lose a visitor.

Brand and trust

8. Show the product clearly

People buy what they can see. Make sure the product is sharp, well lit and large enough to recognize, especially for physical products like cosmetics, food or supplements.

9. Stay recognizably on brand

Use your brand colors, typography and tone consistently across ads. Consistency builds recognition over time, so even people who don't click remember you when they see your next ad or your store.

10. Add proof where you can

Genuine reviews, ratings, awards or recognizable customers make an ad more credible. Only use real proof you have permission to share. Invented claims damage trust and can break advertising rules.

Testing and handover

11. Create variations to test

Don't launch a single ad. Create a few variations that change one thing at a time: the hook, the image, the offer or the headline. Clear differences make it easier to see what actually drives results.

12. Check the details before you publish

  • Spelling and prices are correct
  • The call to action matches what happens after the click
  • The landing page loads quickly on mobile
  • Files are exported at the right sizes and named clearly for whoever runs the campaign
