Ask five people what a website costs and you'll get five different answers, from "₹5,000 on a builder" to "₹10 lakh with an agency". They can all be right, because they're describing different products. A one-page site for a local bakery and an online store with inventory sync are both "websites", but they have almost nothing in common in effort or risk.

The short answer: most small and mid-sized businesses in India spend somewhere between ₹25,000 and ₹3,00,000 on a professional website, depending on how custom it is and what it needs to do. Online stores and web applications sit higher. The rest of this guide explains where your project is likely to land, and why.

Typical website costs in India by type

These are rough ranges you'll commonly see quoted by freelancers and agencies in India. Treat them as a starting point for budgeting, not a price list. Your actual quote depends on scope, content and who builds it.

Type of websiteWhat it usually includesTypical range
Landing pageOne focused page for a campaign, product or event, with a form₹15,000 to ₹60,000
Template-based business website5 to 8 pages on a theme, basic contact form, light customisation₹20,000 to ₹75,000
Custom-designed business websiteUnique design, 8 to 15 pages, CMS, SEO setup, animations₹75,000 to ₹3,00,000
Online store (Shopify or WooCommerce)Product catalogue, payments, shipping, theme customisation₹60,000 to ₹3,00,000
Custom e-commerce or marketplaceCustom checkout, integrations, multiple sellers or complex logic₹4,00,000 and above
Web application or portalUser accounts, dashboards, workflows, custom back end₹5,00,000 and above

If a quote falls far outside these ranges, it doesn't automatically mean something is wrong. It means you should ask what's included, or what's missing.

What actually drives the cost

Design: template or custom

A template gives you a proven layout quickly and cheaply. Custom design means someone studies your audience and brand and designs pages specifically for them. Custom work costs more because it takes more hours: research, wireframes, visual design and revisions. It's worth it when your website needs to stand out, explain something complex or support a premium price.

Number of unique page layouts

Cost grows with the number of different layouts, not just the number of pages. Twenty blog posts share one template. A home page, a services page, a pricing page and a case study page are four separate designs. When you count pages for a quote, count the unique ones.

Content

Copywriting, photography, illustrations and video are often the hidden costs. If you supply finished text and images, the project is cheaper and faster. If the agency writes copy or arranges a photo shoot, expect that to be a separate line item. Delayed content is also the most common reason website projects run late.

Features and integrations

Every feature that connects to something else adds work: payment gateways, booking systems, CRMs, WhatsApp chat, multi-language support, member logins or ERP and inventory sync. A contact form is simple. A booking flow that checks real availability is a small software project of its own.

Platform

WordPress, Shopify, Webflow and fully custom builds (for example with Next.js) each have different upfront and running costs. Builders and themes are cheaper to start. Custom code costs more upfront but gives you full control over speed, design and features. We compare two common choices in Shopify vs custom e-commerce.

Who builds it

  • DIY website builders are the cheapest option in money, but cost you time, and design quality depends on you.
  • Freelancers are often the most affordable professional option. Results vary widely, so check their past work carefully.
  • Agencies cost more because you get a team: strategy, design, development and project management. You're paying for process and accountability as much as for the build.

Ongoing costs to budget for

The launch price isn't the full cost of owning a website. Plan for these every year:

  • Domain name: usually around ₹800 to ₹1,500 a year for a .com or .in.
  • Hosting: from free (for some static sites) to a few thousand rupees a month for busy stores and applications.
  • Business email: priced per user per month if you use a service like Google Workspace.
  • Maintenance: updates, security patches, backups and small changes. Some businesses pay a monthly retainer; others pay per request.
  • Paid plugins or apps: common with WordPress and Shopify, and easy to forget when comparing quotes.
  • Content and marketing: a site that never changes slowly loses relevance, and search visibility with it.

A cheap build with high running costs can end up more expensive over three years than a well-planned build with low running costs.

How to get an accurate quote

The more specific your request, the more comparable the quotes you receive. Before contacting agencies or freelancers, write down:

  1. What the website must achieve (enquiries, sales, bookings, credibility)
  2. Who it's for
  3. The pages and features you need
  4. Who will provide the content
  5. Your budget range and launch date

A one-page brief is enough. Our guide on how to write a website design brief includes a template you can copy.

Sharing a budget range isn't a disadvantage. It helps a good partner suggest what's realistic: what to build now, what to leave for later, and where your money will have the most effect.

Red flags in very cheap quotes

Low prices are fine when the scope is genuinely small. Be careful when a quote is much lower than others for the same brief and doesn't explain:

  • Who owns the website, domain and hosting accounts after launch
  • Whether the design is custom or a reused theme
  • How many revision rounds are included
  • Whether the site will be mobile-friendly, fast and set up for search engines
  • What happens if something breaks after launch

Always make sure the domain and hosting are registered in your business's name. It's the single most common problem businesses face when they switch providers.

Next step

Every website budget is a trade-off between speed, quality and features. The best way to spend wisely is to be clear about the one or two things your website must do well, and build those properly first.
